Collapsed classroom ceiling injures 18 learners in Tembisa

The Gauteng Department of Education confirms the collapse of a grade 6 classroom ceiling at Umthambeka Primary School in Tembisa, injuring at least 18 learners on Tuesday, 27th February 28, 2024.

It is reported that approximately 18 learners affected by the incident, were rushed to the local medical facilities. Two learners are still recovering at a local medical facility while others were discharged.

Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane says “We are indeed concerned by the occurrence of this incident and find it unfortunate that our children were injured in such a manner at school. We would like to wish all affected learners a speedy recovery”.

The media statement stated that the cause of the incident remains unknown, as such an investigation will be launched surrounding the occurrence. The School Management Team, the School Governing Body, and the District will investigate this matter.

 “Furthermore, we call upon SGB members always to be vigilant of challenges faced by the department for necessary attention,” further mentioned the MEC of Gauteng Education, Matome Chiloane.

The department promised that its Psycho-Social Team would be dispatched to the school. To conduct necessary counseling to the affected learners surrounding the incident.
